Established by Congress in 2000, the Veterans History Project in the Library’s American Folklife Center is documenting and preserving first-hand accounts of the nation’s veterans and their families. To date, the project has amassed more than 45,000 individual submissions. Of these, approximately 3,000 are women’s stories. March 16: “Flight Nurse” (1953) The Korean War is dramatized in this film starring Joan Leslie as a nurse torn between two GIs.  Howard Nemerov conducted seminars at the Library for high school English classes. Most incumbents have furthered the development of the Library’s Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature. Joseph Brodsky initiated the idea of providing poetry in public places—supermarkets, hotels, airports and hospitals.  The Library of Congress today made a grant to Southeastern Louisiana University to join a program designed to encourage the educational use of the Library’s vast collections of online primary source materials. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington and Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) presented the $300,000 three-year grant to Southeastern President Randy Moffett during a news conference held on the Southeastern Louisiana University campus. “The Library of Congress is an educational resource for the nation, and we are glad to have Southeastern Louisiana University join our network of Teaching with Primary Sources partners,” said Billington.  That was fiction, but the real story and the “reel” story merge a little when the “Book of Secrets” movie prop and a bonus feature about the Library and its formidable collections went on display this summer in the South Orientation Gallery on the first floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building. Visitors to the Jefferson will have an opportunity to see the display through Sept. 27. Joining the “Book of Secrets” in the display case is another prop from the movie, John Wilkes Booth’s diary. However, unlike the “Book of Secrets,” a Booth diary actually existed. The display also includes two “bonus features” that Disney created for some versions of the film’s DVD release.   In commemoration, and in light of the current hurricane season, the Library of Congress announces a Web site titled “Learning from Katrina,” which provides insights for better responses to record and artifact damage by hurricanes. In the interviews, responders discuss the lessons learned, their motivations, expectations and preparations, and their experiences.   A new anthology “The New North: Contemporary Poetry from Northern Ireland” features the work of these Northern Irish voices. From 1984-1985, he served as assistant chief of the Library’s MARC Editorial Division, and from 1985-1988 held the position of chief of the Cataloging Division of the U.S. Copyright Office. In 1988, Young left the Library to direct Faxon Academic Information Services, where he founded the Faxon Institute for Advanced Studies in Scholarly and Scientific Communication.
