  The Library of Congress has announced a transition to online-only publication of its cataloging documentation. As titles that are in production are released, the Library’s Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) will no longer print new editions of its subject headings, classification schedules and other cataloging publications. The Library will instead provide free downloadable PDF versions of these titles. For users desiring enhanced functionality, the Library’s two web-based subscription services, Cataloger’s Desktop and Classification Web, will continue as products from CDS.  Allison Lange, a doctoral candidate in history at Brandeis University received a fellowship to support research on her dissertation, “Pictures of Change: Transformative Images of Gender and Politics in the Woman Suffrage Movement, 1776-1920.” This project explores the use of publicly circulating imagery in the movement. Lange first will examine late-18th century conventions for representing gender. She then will examine how suffragists used newspaper cartoons and illustrations, photographs and other imagery to promote their movement, which ended with women winning the vote in 1920.  The Library of Congress will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA structure with a panel discussion that will include Nobel Laureate James D. Watson, the world-renown molecular biologist, who—in collaboration with several other scientists—discovered the structure of DNA. Cracking the DNA structure initiated a scientific revolution and changed the field of medicine.  The exhibition “Magna Carta: Muse and Mentor” will open at the Library of Congress on Nov. 6, 2014, and will run through Jan. 19, 2015. The 10-week exhibition celebrates the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, the great charter of rights and liberties that stands at the heart of British and U.S. law. One of only four surviving copies of Magna Carta from 1215—on loan from the Lincoln Cathedral in England—will be the centerpiece of the exhibition.
