 The Digital Library Visitors' Center (DLVC) will close for renovation for a two-month period, beginning on March 19, 1999. The center is located in the James Madison Building of the Library of Congress. During the renovation, demonstrations associated with the Library's National Digital Library Program, including the daily 1 p.m. public tour, will continue in room LJ119 on the first floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building. The DLVC staff will be relocated temporarily in the Jefferson Building. The center's phone numbers (202-707-4157, 4158) will remain the same. Plans for the renovation include an upgraded theater area and a 16-seat classroom to train teachers, librarians, and Library staff about digital technology and use of the Library's on-line collections.   Thomas Jefferson, retired at Monticello, offered his personal library to Congress as a replacement for the books that were destroyed when the British army invaded Washington and burned the Capitol during the War of 1812. After some debate, Congress approved the purchase for $23,950. In a single stroke, the acquisition of Jefferson's library expanded the scope of the Library of Congress far beyond its original boundaries of a legislative reference collection devoted to legal, economic, and historical works. In addition to English, Jefferson's library contained books in French, Spanish, German, Latin, and Greek on a wide variety of subjects, from architecture to science, literature, engineering, philosophy, wine- making, and geography.  Federation of Labor. In another collection, the Chautauqua movement provides insight into popular entertainment before the era of the television. North Dakota State University, one of the 10 award winners in the first cycle of awards, today makes available on-line "The Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920: Photographs from the Fred Hultstrand and F.A. Pazandak Photograph Collections." The more than 900 photographs in these collections document life on farms and in towns of the Great Plains at the turn of the century.   The site, which was frequently cited for excellence by the media, averaged 60 million transactions each month during fiscal 1998. The Library continued to upgrade the Legislative Information System for use by members of Congress and their staff, and the Inquiry Status Information System that the Congressional Research Service used to track some 560,000 congressional requests for timely and objective legislative analysis. On May 15, 1998, the Library awarded a contract to Endeavor Information Systems Inc. for an Integrated Library System to improve automation support for bibliographic control and inventory management activities. As part of the Library's National Digital Library Program, 16 new historical collections were added to the Library's Web site, along with several new Library exhibitions.  The maps selected represent a profile of the development of cartographic style and technique and are not intended to inventory all maps in the division that show railroads. They also reflect the important achievements of early railroaders in reaching their ultimate goal of providing a transportation network spanning the country and linking the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. A second addition to the online "Maps Collection" is a special presentation on Census Atlases, with essays on the history of the compilation of national atlases in the United States and additional information, from the First National Atlas of 1870 through the atlases from 1880 to 1920. The atlases for 1870, 1880 and 1890 are presented page by page and can be read by zooming in on sections of the pages that the viewer wishes to see.   Given to Lincoln's son Robert Todd Lincoln upon his death, the items were kept by the Lincoln family for more than 70 years. They were given to the Library in 1937 as part of the generous bequest of Lincoln's granddaughter, Mary Lincoln Isham. A free audio tour, featuring selections from the audio-visual holdings of the Library, enriches and expands the visitor's experience of the exhibition. The "American Treasures" exhibition will close for a month on Oct. 8 so that the exhibition can be refurbished; it will reopen Nov. 7 with a special installation in three cases featuring items related to presidential inaugurations. Called "a violinist's violinist and a musician's musician" by The New York Times, Louis Kaufman was born in Portland, Oregon, and was sent to New York's Institute of Music Art (Juilliard) at the age of 13 to study with the influential violinist Franz Kneisel on the recommendation of Maud Powell and Efrem Zimbalist, who were themselves violinists of the highest caliber. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ms. Ericsson-Jackson displayed an aptitude for math and science at an early age. She passed the examinations for the three major technical high schools in the New York area, but was sent to live with her grandparents in Cambridge, Mass. After graduating with honors from the Cambridge School of Weston, she attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she earned a bachelor's degree in aeronautical/astronautical engineering in 1986. Ms. Ericsson-Jackson earned a master's degree in Engineering from Howard University in 1992 and accepted her current position at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center that same year.   The Circuit takes its name from Lake Chautauqua in western New York state, where it originated and first appeared in 1904. The standard program consisted of lectures, musical performances, variety acts, and dramatic readings. This summer camp for families that promised "education and uplift" quickly became popular and was copied by the independent Chautauquas. During its peak in the mid-1920s, there were 21 Circuits providing programs in more than 10,000 communities in 45 states to an estimated 40 million people. The Great Depression brought an end to most Circuits, although a few continued until World War II.   Bob McQuillen, the dean of contradance musicians, received a National Heritage Fellowship Award in September from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work in preserving and enriching this tradition. McQuillen, who has played a seminal role in the revival of contradancing in New England, recently celebrated his 50th anniversary playing dances in New Hampshire and around the country. Over the years he has been a member of Ralph Page’s Orchestra, the Canterbury Orchestra, New England Tradition, and other important bands. In addition, McQuillen has published ten notebooks containing the hundreds of dance tunes that he has written, many of which have become standards in the contradance repertoire.   The International Children's Digital Library is a project of the University of Maryland and the Internet Archive. The Library of Congress and the American Library Association are ICDL partners. The project is supported by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Kahle/Austin Foundation, Adobe Systems Inc. and the Markle Foundation. The goal of the ICDL is to make available worldwide a comprehensive library of international children's literature.
