 They were creative and far less aggressive. Some interbred with homo sapiens and many of us today carry Neanderthal DNA. I can not understand why some people think that creating and inventing and utilising are signs of superiority or advancement. People will spend millions on the best house or car or holiday trying to prove themselves or find themselves. The indigenous people of Australia lived with a minimal accoutrements. They were as close to perfect as is humanly possible. The more we need, the further we are from ideal. Being the most needy animal does not make us the best animal.  What do you class as advancement? Without one we would be like the Hermit crabs moving from cave to cave, foraging for fallen fruit.  Sitting in a car for hours a day to get to work in a box to do something you hate before going home to another box to sit in front of a screen, getting less healthy and less clever every day.
